Every human being experiences loss although some losses go unrecognized. Males and female tend to approach loss and grief recovery from differing perspectives and these differences can negatively impact relationships if not understood and managed appropriately. In addition, culture typically teaches its members how to acquire but not how to lose. The grieving process can be confusing and recovery incomplete, resulting in the accumulation of a slush fund of unresolved grief. This can increase the intensity of your reaction to a present experience of loss, even a small loss, and trigger overreactions. The Kubler-Ross model, landmark in helping individuals prepare to die with dignity, differs from strategies that help survivors move through loss, grief, and recovery successfully, even gracefully.


This seminar offers strategies for identifying personal losses and for dealing more effectively with grief and recovery. Effective recovery does not happen automatically. It is a process that can be learned, however. The importance creating your own personal loss line is discussed—you can only manage what you can identify, label, and describe. Key gender differences are highlighted as their differing perspectives can negatively impact relationships if not understood and managed appropriately. The use of metaphor to help children deal with loss is mentioned. Information about additional resources are provided, including The Grief Recovery Pyramid that outlines the three stages of loss, grief, and recovery.
