Taylor-on-the-Brain Bulletin

Realizations Inc - SynapSez®

New Article

The Olympic trials are upon us, soon to be followed by the actual competitive event in London. I never tire of watching athletes use brain-body communication in their chosen field, Nevertheless, inevitably I catch my breath from time to time, both at instances of almost super-human feat as well as catastrophe. A visit from a young athlete in combination with emerging studies on human performance underpin this issue’s article. For many, life is a series of personal Olympic trials. Similar challenges can arise in one’s chosen field. Fortunately, researched strategies can apply, as well.

Mini-Monographs

Recently I've received a great many questions about Family-of-origin Work, Scripts, Unfinished Business, Boundaries, and Self-Esteem. Their volume prompted me to embark on a series of mini-monographs. The first three are being released with this Brain Bulletin:

Unfinished Business
Scripts for Living
Family-of-origin Work

They can be found on the website under Articles/Monographs on the main menu and can be printed out, if you so desire.

Check out Taylor's Q & A section on the website. Feel free to e-mail your questions to Dr. Taylor and she will add those, too (with all personal identification deleted).

Q. It's funny to think I wasted years of my life going to college when it wasn't needed. Go figure!

Answer...

Q. My sister is dating someone who I think is showing sociopathic tendencies. Can you help me better understand what’s going on in that type of brain? I’m frightened although she doesn’t seem to be.

Answer...

Q:  My son recently returned from a third tour of duty in Iraq. He had a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during his second tour of duty and was still sent back. Now he's been discharged but I think he has PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) on top of the TBI and we don't know how to handle his brain or where to go for help. The VA appears to have nothing to help him.

Answer...

Q. Have you personally ever experienced discrimination? If so, please help me understand how bias, prejudice, and discrimination differ.

Answer...

Q. I have a friend who brings me some little gift when she visits. It may be a card, a jar of jam, or an article on brain function. However, she almost always points this out to whomever else is present, saying, “Look what I brought for . . .” I don’t mind her doing this but it's childish behavior. What would trigger her brain to do this?

Answer...

Q: My boss wants me (and other personnel) to complete the BTSA and I am resisting: I don’t like the way you worded the questions, some of the options don't apply to me, I have no idea how I am viewed by others, I dislike being told what to do, and I already know what my brain does well. Give me one good reason I should comply with this request.

Answer...

Q. What is PASS?

Answer...

Q.  How is it that so many young people exhibit anger or disgust towards school?

Answer...

Q. I have several symptoms of PASS. What can I do to begin reversing those symptoms?

Answer...

Q. If I resist urgings from my spouse or friends to do something they want me to do, they just raise their voices and keep repeating the same thing over and over. What is going on in their brains?

Point to Ponder

The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it. —Henry David Thoreau

In life it seems you usually give up something to get something. In and of itself that may be neither good nor bad, especially if you’re deciding between two relatively desirable option. It is what it is. Current studies, however, are showing potential consequences of differing styles of living in terms of health, energy, and even longevity. Therefore, my view of choices has changed from earlier in life. It’s no longer just about how much relative energy this something is going to require; rather it is more about (all things being equal) whether or not this something has a potential for:

  • Taking up my time in a way that prevents me from following my life’s vision
  • Decreasing my level of health and wellness
  • Actually shortening my life

That way of thinking seems more aligned with Thoreau’s perception.
