Q & A
Q. Several students in my daughter's freshman class have been rude to her for no apparent reason. A few have even called her some rather mean nicknames. Although she has felt like replying in kind at times, she has refrained from doing so. Where does that obnoxious behavior come from, and what can she do?
Answer...
Q. I've heard you speak about the importance of doing Brain Aerobic Exercises on a regular basis, but I've done some (okay, sort of hit-and-miss), and I don't really feel any different. It makes me wonder if they are worth the work.
Answer...
Q. Lately I've been really stressed and even more "forgetful" than usual. My brain seems spinning out of control with all manner of worries. A friend told me to practice mindfulness. What is that, and how could it help?

Books
The third book in the Aimi series has been released and is also available in format for Amazon's Kindle. According to Judy G. Brustad, Institute of Children's Literature, six of the top ten iPad apps are children’s books. If you caught my February 4, 2011, blog, no doubt you already picked up the information about e-readers motivating those who are electronically oriented—to read. Here's the link:

Point to Ponder
A truly happy person is defined less by a specific set of circumstances and more by a specific set of attitudes. —Arlene R. Taylor PhD
Recently I had the opportunity to interact with a group of people who were experiencing some very unfortunate experiences. Some were reacting with obvious and continuing anger, fear, sadness, and you name it. Others were acknowledging what was happening and identifying that although it wasn't their favorite life event they would get through it with the help of supportive family and friends—and a positive mental attitude. They often made jokes about what was going on and laughed mirthfully about the vagaries of life.
Also recently, I attended a meeting that included presentations of data related to mind-set and chronic illnesses. Cancer was one of the illnesses discussed. The researcher reported knowing no research that has indicated a negative attitude and mind-set "causes" cancer. Some studies with malignant melanoma, however, have shown a relationship between progression of the disease and the individual's mindset. Patients who changed their maladaptive thinking, enhanced their problem solving skills, implemented stress management techniques, etc. had significantly enhanced survival outcomes at the end of six years. Studies on the benefits of mirthful laughter have shown that it tends to enhance the strength, activity, and effectiveness of natural killer cells, part of the immune system that fights against cancer. So in addition to being more fun to associate with, you might want to do an inventory of your typical mindset. If it's negative, make a different choice. It can make a difference in the rest of your life. As one researcher put it: "Become now the person you want to be when you are very old." |
